Tea tree is a kind of hybrid plant. Sometimes you can see new species of tea trees that are naturally hybridized near the tea garden. However, this kind of natural hybrid tea plant often has no commercial value, and may be difficult to manage, difficult to care for, low yield, poor aroma and taste, etc. The Taiwan Tea Research & Extension Station (TRES) has invested in artificial cross breeding of tea trees for a long time. The successfully selected varieties benefited many tea farmers. For example, Taicha No. 12(JinXuan) is a very representative one. Taicha No. 12(JinXuan) is more resistant to diseases and insects, and has high yield. Good drought resistance and other advantages.
Also, The Taiwan Tea Research & Extension Station (TRES) has invested in finding different flavor of tea. Taicha No. 18(Red Jade) is famous for its special cinnamon and caramel flavor.
It takes a long time for this work. Ex. From parent selection --> hybridization (two years)--> preliminary selection of tea seedlings (one year)--> new individual selection (six years)--> line comparison test (six years) à regional test (six years) --> Review naming. It takes about 21 years of time investment.
